Hello, dear reader! As promised, here is my third review in the Yoga Booty Ballet series. Today I will look into the Light & Easy and Latin Flavor workouts and give my own thoughts about them.
Latin Flavor –
First of all, I’m a bit skeptical about the title for this workout, because this might be the worst one out of the YBB Live DVDs that I own. It starts with some simple breathing exercises that we have learned before, and we set our intention in a new mudra. GIllian makes a lotus flower with her hands, which is essentially placing the thumb and pinky fingers of each hand together. In her own words, the fingers that are extended outwards represent “the thousand petals of the blissful and enchanted lotus flower,” and I personally think that this is the best way to set an intention before the workout begins.
After a brief warm-up, we get into the Latin choreography itself. Personally, I thought the moves were fun and creative, but the TIFTing was becoming more noticeable in this workout compared to the other workouts in the YBB Live series. At one point in the workout when they introduced the pas de bouree, I noticed that it was more of a ballet step than a Latin dance step. They showed this step at a slow pace but when picking up the pace for it to be syncopated with the music, I used my best judgement and went with the rhythm instead of jerking off the movements.
Shortly after the choreography is over, Teigh announces that we are going to do some “ballet floor barre” with the usage of the mat only (but not the squishy ball). This section has a variety of ab and booty-centric movements that lengthen and strengthen the lower half of the body. While I thought this section was nice for that reason, my heart rate eventually began to fall near the end of the workout, which consists of a yoga-based cooldown along with bringing back the lotus flower mudra from the beginning.
In my opinion, this workout was just an okay one, but most parts of the workout could use a little more work here. As an alternative to this workout, the Latin–inspired choreography from Minna Lessig’s Emergency Workout and Winsor Pilates: Accelerated Fat Burning are better options. If you want to feel the infectious rhythms of Latin music and get the fat-burning benefits as well, you should definitely give these workouts a try.
Light and Easy –
On the other hand, the Light and Easy workout is a gentle, accessible session designed to cater to all fitness levels. The program offers a slow-paced, low-impact workout that focuses on relaxation, simple dance steps (with their signature moves), and abdominal toning. Since this is considered to be a beginner level workout, the girls encourage you to listen to your body and modify any moves that you need to.
At the beginning of the workout, Gillian encourages the class to strengthening our magnetic field (aura), which is an energy bubble that attracts positivity and deflects negativity, as she describes here. Next, Teigh leads us in a kriya for polishing the energy field, bringing both arms up and down. A breath of fire is added into this kriya followed by a mantra called “sat nam,” which I mentioned before in my previous review for Cardio Cabaret. Gillian then announces that we are going to be setting our intention in miracle mudra, which involves the thumbs of both hands gently touching each other underneath the navel.
To be sure that our bodies are ready for the workout, the girls begin with a simple warm-up before moving on to the cardio-dance section. Most of the moves are simple to learn yet easy to follow along, especially for those who are relatively new to dance fitness workouts in general. Now there are some signature moves that were previously from the Basic and Advanced workouts, but they are a great addition to the choreography as a whole.
Other than that, the camera was mostly focused on Kelly (the blonde lady with the purple leggings) for some weird reason, who is one of the students in the YBB Live series. I forgot to mention her when I was reviewing Hip Hop Abs and Cardio Cabaret, but the camera was focusing on her (because Kelly was in the middle) instead of the entire class, including Gillian and Teigh. This happened multiple times during the workout, but I did not mind it that much.
Of course, Yoga Booty Ballet sessions are not complete without the ballet part, so after the choreography is finished, Gillian leads us in a short sequence of ballet sculpting moves before moving to the floor for some core work. Teigh then places the squishy ball between the knees and the pubic bone, which is called position 4 and is only featured in the Light & Easy workout. The ball is used to do some new abdominal exercises along with some that were previously featured in the Basic workout, but will be mentioned again in my review for Abdominals & Core Strength.
To conclude this workout, the girls utilize some deep twists and some core strengthening poses like the bridge pose, the cat-cow, and the bird-dog (not mentioned). Gillian then comes back to the kriya from the beginning of this workout, but done at a much slower pace before transitioning into gian mudra while still in easy pose. Finally, the girls have a message of gratitude that they say at the end, encouraging the viewer to spread love.
As I wrap up my third review for Yoga Booty Ballet, I can recall the joys and hardships associated with both workouts. Personally, I thought that Light & easy was the better workout in this set because it did a great job integrating moves from both the Basic and Advanced workouts from the Classic Goddess series into a beginner level class that can also be tailored to all fitness levels. I’m looking forward to uncovering even more ways to blend fitness with mindfulness practices that are beneficial in the long run, and this program is perfect if you’re interested in starting or continuing your YBB journey.
Thank you for joining me today. Stay tuned for the final review for Yoga Booty Ballet, where I’ll dive into the intricacies of core strengthening and sculpting!
